Thomas Cook UK boss returns to role

Chris Mottershead resumes leadership of Thomas Cook’s UK arm with immediate effect.

Chris Mottershead has been reappointed to his role as Thomas Cook’s UK boss following Ingo Burmester’s sudden departure to be closer to his family in Germany. Burmester will take a role with Kuoni parent DER Touristik in May 2019.

Mottershead joined Thomas Cook from Tui in 2015, moving to the group-wide role of chief of product and operations in April – a role in which he will continue. Reprising his former role, Mottershead will also be responsible for increasing the share of Thomas Cook’s own-brand hotels to UK customers and overseeing ongoing “transformation work” as the operator works to recover amid the two profit warnings it issued within two months.

Mottershead will work alongside Anth Mooney, chief of UK retail and money.

Chief executive Peter Fankhauser said: “Given the critical importance of turning around the performance of the UK business I have decided to hand back the leadership of the UK source market to Chris Mottershead for the time being. I am confident that his experience in running a British holiday company, along with Anth’s absolute focus on our retail and money business, will help to accelerate the UK’s return to profitable growth.”
